Funny
Sunday morning I got up early, dressed quietly, made my lunch, grabbed the dog, slipped quietly into the garage to put my bike up on my car and proceeded to back out into a torrential downpour.
The wind was blowing 50 mph. I pulled back into the garage, turned on the radio, and discovered that the weather would be bad throughout the day.
I went back into the house, quietly undressed, and slipped back into bed. There I cuddled up to my wife's back, now with a different anticipation, and whispered, 'The weather out there is terrible.'
My loving wife replied, 'Can you believe my stupid husband is out biking in that shit?'
I still don't know to this day if she was joking, but I have stopped biking on Sunday mornings.

Dopers Suck...even in Florida!
reprinted from cyclingnews.com
American athlete accepts suspension
Cyclist Ricardo Hernandez of Miami, Florida, accepted a two-year suspension after testing positive for a prohibited substance according to the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).
Hernandez, 42, tested positive for exogenous testosterone, an anabolic agent, which is prohibited under the USADA Protocol and the rules of the UCI. His suspension took effect September 15, 2008, the date of his acceptance. Hernandez was disqualified from all competitive results achieved on and subsequent to March 2, 2008, the date his urine sample was collected at the Vuelta Independencia National, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.

Enough Already
Unlike this picture, Greg Lemond has a hard time keeping his mouth shut.
Even after losing a ton of clout and respect with the American cycling fan base, Lemond continues to offer up unwanted advise and stick his nose where it doesn't belong, all in some ill-fated attempt at recapturing some of the lime light that he experienced in the 80's.

There's only one...
A couple of designer friends of mine got together and made up a bunch of these t-shirts. The first run sold out, but there may be a re-order if the interest is there.
If you don't get it...you probably shouldn't buy the shirt.

Bartenders, Hide your tip jars!
College football season is just over the horizon. The Gators are ready to make another run, Tebow is striking fear into the hearts of his opponents and Gainesville area bars are anxiously awaiting an influx in business after a summer slowed by a lack of students and a sluggish economy.
I know Urban Meyer would have us not look beyond the first game of the season (Hawaii 8/30) but for fans of Florida football, the match up the following weekend against in-state rival Miami has our "Rama-Jama" goin'.
This brings me to the title of the post. The last time that the thug-life contingent from south F-L-A rolled into town I was bartending at a downtown hotspot. The class of of our usual demographic decreased significantly on the night before the game. The ghetto-fabulous Miami fans made the night almost unbearable. A smattering of fights broke out throughout the evening due to the inability of Miami fans to conduct themselves in an adult manner. Glassware was broken, furniture trashed, cocktail waitresses harassed and above all...MY F**KIN' TIP JAR WAS STOLEN!
From right off the bar top, some classless moron got away with a couple of hours worth of tips which could've easily meant a month's car payment, the purchase of a pair of tickets to the game, or enough beer to fuel the next day's tailgate!
So I've just come across a web page that identifies the start time of this years UF vs. Miami game. Since ESPN is picking it up, it's going to be an 8:00pm game! This means area bartenders will be inundated with green and orange-clad douche-bags for 10+ hours on September 6th.
Watch your tip jars...keep 'em on the back bar out of reach of any Canes. They're NOT TO BE TRUSTED!

In Honor of the Alp...
Today is the Alp D'Huez stage of the Tour de France and so...I give you a photo of me from 2006. I'm on the decent from Alp D'Huez. Behind me is the little town of Bourge d'Oisans where the climbing starts.
A couple more pics from that trip.

Ahhh, training food!
You're getting ready to start the longest stage in this year's Tour de France. You've had all the carbs you can handle for one morning and you're just looking for that little boost to fuel your legs for the race. There is a plaza beside the starting line where locals are selling their wares. You quickly scan the different vendors and then all the sudden you spot that little "boost" you're looking for...OYSTERS !

...SERIOUSLY ?!...you're going to eat raw oysters just before the start of the 232 Km stage 5?

The Second Coolest Kit
If I weren't already wearing THE coolest kit around I'd definitely be rocking this sweet piece of cycling apparel!
The under-stated black and white with the use of my favorite font, Helvetica, in all lowercase is SIMPLY stunning.
I may have to steal the idea at some point in the future...brilliant!

Yankee or Dixie?
This is a pretty cool online quiz to figure how Yankee or Dixie you are based upon some common pronunciations and terminology that you may or may not use on a daily basis.
I ended up with a 78% Dixie...coulda been higher, but I was born in Chicago, that probably has something to do with it.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder...
...but I always thought it was "Out of site out of mind" when it came to websites and blogs. I've obviously been irregular with the good ole' 5count blog of late...I've laid off the entire editorial staff and just come to accept the fact that things around the 5count world headquarters were kinda dormant. But I've recently checked out some of my hit-counter stats, and to my surprise I still have a steady trickle of people viewing this site (probably just checking to see if I've put anything new up). So for those few of you who make the effort to swing by from time to time, here's a little random post for ya.
Last year I was playing around and made a composite photo of me and myself collaborating on a project. It ain't much, but at least it's something new to look at.
For some recent cycling stuff, cruise on over to the site that has been using up all of my "bloging-time"...Cycle Logic

Oooh Dannnngggg!
Team Astana may be barred from this years Tour de France. This is going to SUCK for Levi and Horner.
I'm not commenting on anybody's guilt or Innocence with regards to doping, past or present, but even with all the management, rider, and staff changes in the world....Astana still has riders on their roster who have been implicated in Operacion Puerto.
I'm just wondering if the ASO (and the Giro de Italia for that matter) would've made different decisions had Johan not brought Contador over with him???

Floyd seems angry...for good reason?
In a recent interview with VeloNews senior writer, Neal Rogers, Floyd Landis tells how he REALLY feels.
To this reader, he comes off as frustrated, betrayed and above all...angry. We all have our own take on the doping situations that have plagued the sport of pro cycling and I pretty much hate them all. But read this interview and tell me Floyd doesn't have a reason to be angry. Does he get hot-headed and possibly makes comments that he doesn't have enough information to make...Yes. Does this reader agree with all of his comments and accusations...No. Does this reader think Floyd is madder than hell and with good reason...Yep!

Rain or Shine
Tomorrow is the first edition of a 3-week practice Crit Series presented by Cycle Logic. The weather forcast is calling for a high of 62 degrees, 14+mph winds, 30% chance of rain early with a 60-90% chance of rain during the bulk of the races and toss in some scattered thunder storms just for good measure...now that sounds like some good bike-racing weather!
Regardless of the weather, the show will go on. Tune back into the 5count blog next week for race results and a recap of the days racing.

Slipstream press
ESPN did a great story on Team Slipstream, their anti-doping efforts and their recent team launch in Boulder, Colorado. If you missed it, check it out.
Best line of the story...
"If we really want to keep doping out of this team, we have to keep how we win in the context of the human body. Some days are great, some days are not ... To agree to not dope, to never let that enter the context of a team, is to agree to fail sometimes. It is to agree to let your fans down sometimes. It is to agree to the fallibility of the human body. It is to sign that contract and live by it, no matter how high the pressure.
